Berlansky's first name is Esther, and she is actually grown-up. The young musician, who can refer to jazz studies in Amsterdam, which she completed with honors, composed and sung on this record. And how! "Growin' Up" is not maniacally fashionable, but exquisitely fresh, blitheful and invigorating. Besides a couple of own compositions you can find tasteful, jazzy versions of Hungarian traditionals which not only reflect Berlansky's roots, but also turn out to be a highly interesting compound. Also, Berlansky presents herself as a versatile singer, who intelligently avoids to put herself in the limelight as the overall dominant power, but instead gives her skillful band enough scope for creative work. You can hear that very clearly in the extensive version of Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence", where the elegiac improvisations of pianist Tony Roe develop so beautifully, that one actually would like to exult but rather than that one stays listening devoutly.
